Project Overview

A U.S. customer with an established business relationship with EISKUHL needed to upgrade the cooling fan used in its controller products. The existing 12V DC fan operated at 4000 RPM, but its airflow was insufficient for the customer's cooling requirements. The customer also required a fan solution that could meet specific environmental protection requirements and provide speed feedback.

EISKUHL evaluated different fan speed options to help address the airflow requirement while considering the electrical and operational needs of the application.

Customer Challenges: Insufficient Airflow and Specific Protection Requirements

The customer identified several requirements for the controller cooling fan upgrade.

Insufficient airflow: The existing 4000 RPM fan did not provide the airflow required by the application, prompting the customer to explore higher-speed alternatives.

Environmental protection requirements: The customer requested an IP55-rated solution for the intended operating environment.

Speed feedback functionality: The upgraded fan needed a three-wire configuration with an FG signal wire, allowing the connected system to receive fan speed feedback.

Compatibility with the existing system: The solution needed to maintain a 12V DC rated voltage to suit the customer's electrical requirements.

Customized Fan Options: Comparing 4000 RPM and 4500 RPM

To address the airflow challenge, EISKUHL provided documented specifications for two fan speed options: 4000 RPM and 4500 RPM. Comparing their airflow and static pressure ratings helps illustrate the performance differences between the two options.

What the Performance Comparison Shows

The documented 4500 RPM option offers a maximum airflow of 65.18 CFM, compared with 57.94 CFM for the 4000 RPM option. This represents an increase of approximately 12.5% in maximum airflow.

The maximum static pressure also increases from 5.33 mmH₂O to 6.753 mmH₂O, providing a higher-rated pressure option for evaluation in the customer's cooling system.

These gains come with trade-offs. The documented noise level rises from 42.75 dB(A) to 45.11 dB(A), while the rated current limit increases from 0.31 A to 0.43 A. Therefore, selecting the appropriate fan requires consideration of cooling performance, noise tolerance, and available electrical capacity—not rotational speed alone.

Three-Wire Design with FG Speed Feedback

Use a three-wire configuration consisting of power, ground, and an FG signal wire. The FG output provides fan speed feedback to the connected system, supporting speed monitoring where the controller's electronics are designed to receive this signal.

The fans also use ball bearings. For controller applications, the final selection should take into account the system's operating conditions, installation space, electrical limits, and cooling requirements.

A Specification-Based Approach to Controller Cooling

This project illustrates the importance of matching fan performance to the actual requirements of an electronic cooling application. By comparing the documented 4000 RPM and 4500 RPM options, the customer can assess the potential airflow improvement alongside changes in noise, current consumption, and static pressure.

For controller products and other electronic equipment, a suitable cooling fan should be selected based on the complete operating requirements rather than RPM alone. Voltage compatibility, airflow, static pressure, speed feedback, noise, and environmental protection all contribute to the final selection.
